Michigan 69, UConn 63. It's over.
The Auto Researcher picked Michigan to win the national championship. It was the only model out of nine that did. Tonight, that pick was worth 320 points -- enough to vault from 5th place to 1st by a margin of 260 points. The machine that trained itself just won The Bracket Lab.
The Game
Michigan's historic offensive run finally met resistance. After scoring 90 or more in five consecutive tournament games, the Wolverines were held to 69 by UConn's suffocating defense. It didn't matter. Michigan controlled the game for 35 of 40 minutes.
UConn played like a team trying to win its third championship in four years. They forced Michigan into half-court sets, slowed the pace, and made every possession a grind. Michigan's response was to stop trying to outscore them and just outexecute them. Aday Mara finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Danny Wolf added 18. The Wolverines shot 48% from the field and committed just 8 turnovers.
UConn closed to within 3 with two minutes left. Michigan answered with a Wolf mid-range jumper and two Mara free throws. The Huskies never got closer.

Four models picked Duke. Two picked Illinois. One picked Houston. One picked Gonzaga. One picked Michigan. The one that picked Michigan won.
97.7th Percentile
The Auto Researcher's ESPN Tournament Challenge bracket finished in the 97.7th percentile -- better than 97.7% of all brackets submitted nationally. 1330 points on ESPN's scoring system. Out of millions of entries.
This is an ML ensemble that tested 21 different prediction strategies against 14 years of tournament data, trained on 827 historical games, and optimized its bracket through Monte Carlo simulation. No human picked Michigan for it. No prompt told it to favor the Wolverines. It found Michigan on its own.
The 320-Point Swing
Before tonight, The Auto Researcher sat in 5th place with 990 points -- 60 behind the leader. The championship round is worth 320 points for a correct pick. That single correct call turned a 60-point deficit into a 260-point lead. No other model had any points left to earn. The entire leaderboard was locked except for one line.
This is the beauty and brutality of bracket scoring. You can pick 48 games correctly through five rounds and still finish behind a model that picked 45 -- if those last 3 include the champion. The Auto Researcher's early rounds were good, not great. It went 27/32 in the Round of 64, 12/16 in the Round of 32, 4/8 in the Sweet 16. Middle of the pack. But it had Michigan cutting down the nets, and that's all that mattered.
What Won
The Auto Researcher was built differently than the other eight models. It wasn't given a methodology. It wasn't told to focus on matchups, or history, or chaos, or efficiency ratings. It was given tournament data and one instruction: find the best bracket.
It ran an autonomous research loop. Tested 21 strategies. Kept the ones that backtested well. Discarded the rest. Trained an ensemble on what survived. Optimized through simulation. The output was a bracket with Michigan as champion at 75% confidence.
Four models -- The Scout, The Quant, The Historian, The Scout Prime -- all converged on Duke. Different methodologies, same answer. The model that was allowed to think for itself found a different answer. The right one.
The Experiment Is Over
